Notepad on Windows 11 is getting Copilot-powered AI features for everyone

Microsoft is transforming Notepad from a basic text editor into a smarter writing tool by expanding Copilot-powered AI features to more Windows 11 users. What was once limited to Copilot+ PCs is now rolling out across compatible systems—while still remaining optional.

One of the biggest upgrades is AI text streaming. Instead of waiting for a full response, AI-generated text now appears in real time as it’s created—similar to modern conversational AI tools. This makes writing, rewriting, and summarizing feel faster and more interactive.

Microsoft is also expanding Markdown support inside Notepad. Beyond basic formatting like bold and italics, users can now work with nested lists and strikethrough text, making the app more useful for structured notes, documentation, and drafts.

Importantly, Microsoft is keeping flexibility in place. AI features require a Microsoft account sign-in, but they can be completely disabled from settings. Markdown formatting can also be turned off, allowing users to keep the classic plain-text experience if they prefer.

The bigger picture: Microsoft isn’t replacing simple tools—it’s quietly upgrading them with optional AI, blending familiarity with new productivity capabilities.
